Finally a male Wheatear by the cattle grid at Marsh Farm this morning.

24 Pink-footed Goose on No 3 tank. The geese were spooked by a ship sailing up the canal but when they took off a female Merlin was revealed.

A male Hen Harrier hunting the meadow fields at Redwall reedbed.

At 9:10am  a male Marsh Harrier dropped down in the reeds next to the small pool by Marsh Farm and flushed out 2 Common Snipe. But still no sign of any migrants here.

A fine image of a (sub-adult male) Kestrel over the marsh by Stuart Maddocks and one of 6-7 raptors on the marsh today.

Stoat watched along Brook Furlong Lane and 9 Fieldfare plus a Chiffchaff in trees there and another singing Chiffchaff along Rake Lane.

The track at the back of the model aircraft flying field had 100 + Chaffinch with 9 Brambling, 20+ Reed Bunting, 6 Meadow Pipit and 6 Skylark were also about the fields.

Later in the afternoon and back on No 6 tank were 2 Redshank on the small pool, a single Avocet and 3 Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Redshank and c 20 Pied Wagtail plus a Goldcrest in elder bushes on the western banks of the tank.

20 Tufted Duck and a single Little Grebe on the Pumping Station pool.

No 6 tank: The Avocet was still present, 40 Common Shelduck, 300 Common Teal, 40 Shoveler and smaller numbers of Mallard.

30.03.13.  Pink-footed Goose, No 3 tank, Frodsham Marsh. Paul CrawleyNo 3 tank: 18 Pink-footed Goose were south of the Canal Pools feeding close to the Canada Goose flock. Later an additional 10 birds flew in from the west then circled out to the estuary before returning to join the original birds. Also present was a pair of Great Black-backed Gulls exerting their superiority over 4 Raven at the carcass of a sheep. Not a pretty sight watching the Ravens getting a good kicking by the brutish gulls! There were also an additional 10 birds loitering about No 5 tank – Marsh Farm – Frodsham Score area.

30.03.13. Black-taile Godwits, No 6 tank, Frodsham Marsh
34 Mute Swan again in fields by Rake Lane and a total of 200 Curlew west of No 4 tank with 10 Black-tailed Godwit on No 6 tank topping up a fine selection of birds and birders present on the marsh today.

Finally, at least 8 Common Buzzard in the area were taking advantage of the sunshine with birds riding the evening thermals.

 A Hen Harrier joined the Marsh Harrier (males) over No 6 tank and Chiffchaff noted.

AM period: No 6 tank: Water Rail calling, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 1 Ruff  Plenty of Curlews and Lapwings but not a single Golden Plover. One Oystercatcher flying over the Weaver Bend. 

PM Period: 3 Avocet briefly on No 6 and then saw them again later from the farm feeding on the tide’s edge on the estuary. The male Marsh Harrier reappeared on the tank.

50 Fieldfares on both sides of the track to the Marsh Farm. Only 3 Ravens noted.

Stoat ran across the track by the horse paddock.

10+ Pied Wagtails on north end No 6 tank, 20+ Reed Buntings along Lordship Lane by the model aircraft field. Also total of 80 + Linnets in various locations.

A Woodcock over No 5 tank at 4.30 pm was the first sighting for a while.

High tide on Frodsham Score saw 51 Pink-footed Goose with c 350 Canada Goose. c 400 Wigeon, 300 Common Teal, 48 Common Shelduck and a couple of Gadwall. On the wader front 21 Grey Plover, 350 Dunlin, 7 Oystercatcher, 200 Curlew and 3 Redshank were a little under par.

No 6 tank: 350 Common Teal, 20 Wigeon, 10 Cormorant, Ruff and 3 Avocet.

I found quite a few of these Buzzard pellets ( opposite image) below the mast on No 4 tank.

No 6 tank: 3 Avocet, 446 Common Teal, 36 Wigeon, 21 Tufted Duck, 2 Shoveler, 21 Common Shelduck and 47 Mallard.

. male Marsh Harrier was quartering the northern banks of No 6 tank and No 5 tank but performing well in the area by the viewing platform .

A Short-eared Owl was hunting along the junction of No 6-5-3 tanks at 5.50 pm.

Godscroft Lane area: 6+ Brambling, 7 Redwing, 3 Buzzard (1 trying to pinch dead Wood Pigeon behind a Willow), 4 Sparrowhawk attacks and Great Spotted Woodpecker on numerous occasions.

Adult male Hen Harrier over No 6 tank then dropped down in bare patch among the reeds followed by a flock of 30+ Linnet mobbing him. The harrier was seen later along Lordship Lane flushing 20 Curlew from a field. 2 Common Snipe were also along the edge of the field . 100+ Meadow Pipits, 18 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing and 20 Linnets in the horse paddock feeding in patches of grass left by melting snow . 6 Black-tailed Godwit flew over, 100’s of Canada Geese, 3 Raven, 20 Lapwing, 3 Golden Plover and 10 Curlew on track to Marsh Farm but still no sign of Wheatear.
